Normally, the pharmaceutical market in Indonesia grows at2 - 3 times the rate of GDP growth. In 2005, factors such as reduced consumer purchasing power, high inflation rates and the depreciation in the value of the Rupiah contributed to the fact that the industry grew at a slightly slower rate than in previous years, expanding at the rate of 13.5% to a total value of Rp. 23.608 trillion.
It should be noted that while the majority of raw materials for the industry are imported, and therefore vulnerable to effects of depreciation in the value of the Rupiah, the ability of the pharmaceuticals industry to increase the price of its products is constrained by consumers’ ability to pay. Therefore, price increases are usually less than the inflation rate. With the depreciation in the value of the Rupiah against US Dollar over 2005 of 5.81%, from Rp. 9,290 at the end of 2004 to Rp. 9,830 at the end of 2005, and an inflation rate of 17.11%, the competitive pressures on players in the pharmaceutical industry were considerable. 

On the other hand, there were a number of positive developments affecting the industry as a whole. In early 2005, the Indonesian Government implemented a policy to extend medical, work-related accident, pension and life insurance coverage to all Indonesians through the National Social Security System. This will improve the health and well-being of Indonesian consumers by providing increased access to necessary treatments, including a full range of pharmaceutical products.
The Government also conducted a review on the pricing policies for essential drugs and branded generics. In the face of challenging circumstances, Kalbe recorded excellent performance in 2005, with revenues from sales reaching Rp. 5.87 trillion, representing an increase of 16.42% over the previous year, when the figure stood at Rp. 5.04 trillion.
Net income reached Rp. 653.33 billion in year 2005 and Rp. 450.70 billion in year 2004, or an increase of 44.96%. 

Throughout the year, Kalbe took a number of significant steps to ensure that the Company will remain competitive and profitable in the evolving environment in which it operates.
Most significantly, on December 16, 2005, the management of Kalbe effected the merger of Dankos and Enseval into the company to create the largest publicly listed pharmaceutical company in Southeast Asia.

Kalbe continued to enter into strategic alliances with international partners to facilitate its ability to offer an expanded range of increasingly complex and valuable products to its consumers.
